Fat is essential for digestion, vitamin absorption, hormone production and immune health. Fat is the other primary fuel for working muscles during exercise. Fat is vital for building cell walls and regulating hormones, for transporting vitamins A, D, E and K to cells and it is essential for bone and immune health. Inadequate fat intake can lead to major health complications. My favourite fats are the Mediterranean-style mono-unsaturated (oleic) oils and omega-3 fatty acids, which are anti-inflammatory and can help prevent diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. These anti-inflammatory fats also reduce the symptoms of arthritis and depression. Studies show that anti-inflammatory fats are associated with longevity. My top choices are cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, macadamia, coconut, flaxseed, walnut and almond.
